Finding Pale Tongues in the overworld Farming for Pale Tongues in Farron Keep (offline method) Invading other players as a member of Rosaria’s Fingers (online method)

We’ll detail exactly how to pull off each of these methods down below, as well as how to use your Pale Tongues once you have them.

Finding Pale Tongues in The Overworld

There are 3 Pale Tongues scattered throughout Dark Souls 3 as overworld items. The first is in a secret area in the Undead Settlement.

Tongue #1: Undead Settlement

Once you’ve cleared the Undead Settlement for the first time, you’ll find the Road of Sacrifices Bonfire at its end. Warp here to get started on finding the Pale Tongue. From the Bonfire, backtrack into the large stone building behind you and take the elevator back up towards the Undead Settlement. Once you’re at the top of the elevator shaft, send the elevator back down, but roll off before it takes you down with it. Wait for a moment and a secret elevator will descend from above, opening up a new area of the building. Step onto the secret elevator and look towards the Undead Settlement. Point your camera down as the elevator rises to find a secret walkway midway up this new elevator shaft. Now that you’ve spotted it, ride the elevator back down and roll off onto the walkway during the ride. Once you’re safely on the secret platform, turn to your right and step out of the window here to enter the area with the Pale Tongue. Also in this large area is a Fire Demon patrolling the main courtyard. Needless to say, you’ll have to deal with this mini-boss before you can loot the Pale Tongue. If you haven’t entered the Profaned Capital yet, you may meet Siegward of Catarina here, a friendly NPC that will be a massive help in taking out the Demon. If you don’t have Siegward there to help you, play it safe and be patient when fighting the Demon. Feel free to overlevel slightly and come back later, too. Once the Demon has gone down, turn your attention to the corpses hanging from the building at the back of the arena. Two of these corpses hold items, and both can be cut down with a swing of a weapon. Climb onto the roof of the shack in front of the building and cut down the left-most corpse, then pick up the Pale Tongue from it once it’s fallen to the ground.

Tongues #2+3: The Cathedral of The Deep

The Cathedral of The Deep holds two Pale Tongues within it, with the first being on the main path through the Cathedral. Explore the Cathedral naturally and you’ll find yourself in its enormous main hall. Take a quick look around the hall and spot the Two Chained Giants on either end of the room. You will have encountered the first already, running away from it as it tried to squash you. The other kneels in some sludge at the other end of the hall, guarding an array of items that lay around it. The Pale Tongue is the item closest to the stairs. Once you’ve spotted it, plan the fastest route to it before setting off into the sludge. Once you’ve entered the sludge, the Giant will wake before trying to squash you as you slowly inch away from it. The trip through the sludge is dangerous. But with carefully timed dodges and close observation of the Giant, you can easily make it to the Pale Tongue unscathed. The second Pale Tongue in the Cathedral of The Deep is found in a secret area close to the rafters. To reach this hidden area you’ll need the final shortcut door unlocked. If you haven’t opened it up yet, check out our guide on joining the Rosaria’s Fingers Covenant to find out how. Warp to the Cleansing Chapel Bonfire to get started, then head through the left shortcut door. Turn left at the first door in this passage to find an elevator that takes you to a previously inaccessible tower. Take out the enemy at the top of the elevator ride, then step through the large archway nearby and onto the small balcony. Follow the balcony around to the left, then take the ladder up to the next floor. Take out the Deacon up here, then walk over to the large hole in the corner of the room. Step up onto the rubble and look over the edge to see a large ramp leading towards the main cathedral building. Step or roll off of the ledge and onto the ramp, then walk up the ramp until it meets the cathedral building. Once you reach solid ground, turn right and follow the pathway until you reach its end. You’ll find a corpse laid here holding an item – interact with it to pick up the final overworld Pale Tongue.

Farming in Farron Keep (offline method)

Once you’ve picked up the 3 Pale Tongues in the overworld, you’ll need to get farming for more. If you prefer to stay away from PvP play, the fastest way to fill your remaining Pale Tongue quota is by farming Darkwraiths in Farron Keep. Pale Tongues have a common drop rate compared to other Covenant items, sitting at a 5% chance to drop from each Darkwraith killed. This is very generous compared to the drop rates endured by Blades of the Darkmoon, but it’s still going to be slow, so you’ll want to boost your item discovery rate before you get started. Check out our farming build guide to learn how to maximize your item discovery rate, and speed up the Pale Tongue grind in the process. Once you’ve boosted your item discovery rate to a comfortable level, warp to the Farron Keep Perimeter Bonfire to get started with the Farm. Walk forward from the Bonfire towards the Abyss Watchers boss arena, slowing down before you step out from the ruins. Stand on the edge of the ruins and pan your camera around to the left to see two Darkwraiths walking up the path. From here, you can choose between two methods of completing this farm. The safe strategy is to watch the Darkwraiths walk past until they meet the crowd of Ghru enemies up ahead. Once the enemies start fighting amongst themselves, you can swoop in, backstab the Darkwraiths and end the fight with relative ease. If you want to speed up the farm, you can instead confront the Darkwraiths immediately, fighting them two-on-one in a dangerous fight. Only take the second option if you’re confident that you can beat the Darkwraiths every time – you won’t save any time by taking this route and dying.

Invading Other Worlds as a Rosaria’s Covenant Member

Note: If you’re playing on PC, this method doesn’t work as of May 11th 2022, as FromSoftware haven’t yet reactivated the servers following the hacking issues in February. If you’re fortunate enough to be playing Dark Souls 3 on consoles, invading other players’ worlds is by far the most fun way to pick up some Pale Tongues. Before you can start farming Pale Tongues online, you’ll need two things. The first is the Rosaria’s Fingers Pledge, an item which gives you membership to the Rosaria’s Fingers Covenant. The second is the Red Eye Orb, an item used to perform the invasion itself. You can find the Red Eye Orb by killing a staff-wielding Man-Grub right outside Rosaria’s Bedchamber. Once you have both items, head to a popular PvP location such as the High Wall of Lothric or the area right after the Pontiff Sulyvahn boss fight. Equip the Rosaria’s Finger Pledge in your Covenant slot, and then use the Red Eye Orb to begin searching for another player to invade. Once you find a match, you’ll be transported into another player’s world with all of your gear and ½ of your total Estus Flasks. The final step to receiving your Pale Tongue is killing the host of this world or a blue phantom that they summon. Unfortunately, allied white or gold phantoms won’t drop Pale Tongues. It must be the host or a blue phantom.

How To Use Pale Tongues

Pale Tongues are a Covenant rank item, working as a currency within the Rosaria’s Fingers Covenant. The only NPC that accepts Pale Tongues as currency is Rosaria herself, so you’ll first need to find her in the Cathedral of the Deep. Once you do, talk to her until you’re given the option to join the Covenant, then accept her offer. From now on you can kneel before Rosaria to offer her Pale Tongues. Offering 10 in total will grant you the Obscuring Ring as a reward, while offering 30 will give you the Man-Grub’s Staff.
