As a result of requiring you to beat the final boss, the Dragon Egg is the single rarest item in Minecraft, but what can you do with it? Sure, it makes a cool trophy piece in your home, to show off to your pets that you’ve killed the Ender Dragon, but what else is it used for?
Can You Hatch a Dragon Egg in Minecraft?
Unfortunately, there is currently no way to hatch the Dragon Egg in vanilla Minecraft. Sorry to disappoint, but the Dragon Egg really does serve as nothing more than a rare mantle piece that can teleport. Newer players may assume that the Dragon Egg could be used to spawn in a new dragon, similar to the spawn eggs in creative mode, but this isn’t the case.
There is, however, a way to respawn the Ender Dragon.
Minecraft: How to Respawn the Ender Dragon
Doing this requires placing four Ender Crystals around the edges of the bedrock portal in the End. These crystals can be created by placing an Ender Eye in the center of a crafting table, a Ghast Tear beneath it, and surrounding it with seen glass blocks. Considering you only need four of these, it’s actually fairly cheap to spawn a brand new dragon.
Unfortunately, another Dragon Egg will not be dropped after the first one. If you were hoping to stock up on Dragon Eggs for a potential future update that gives them some utility, then you’re out of luck. Considering how regularly Minecraft receives updates, even bringing new utilities to old features, it seems inevitable that these Dragon Eggs will be hatchable at some point, so keep your Dragon Egg somewhere safe and don’t let it teleport out of sight!
If you’re impatient and want to hatch some eggs now, there are plenty of mods available that will allow you to do that. The most popular one, the Dragon Mounts: Legacy mod, will allow you to do exactly that, tame the newly hatched dragons, and ride them.
Maybe one day, this will be possible in vanilla Minecraft, but keep your trophy somewhere nice until then. Check out our other Minecraft guides here on GameSkinny.
